Q: Legality of non-prescription Ultram online/questionnaire checkups and associated dangers.?
To all those in the medical community:

Since the age of 14 I have experienced extreme stabbing pains originating in my lower back descending down both or either leg. Furthermore, the pain often causes considerable nausea. Concerning this problem, I have visited doctors regularly for 8 years now. I was diagnosed with (what I worry is a bogus etiology) Degenerative Disk Disease. I regularly engage in core muscle exercises and stretching therapy – which although helps some; does not suffice to adequately reduce pain. I swing from strong aches to immobility. On a good day, I walk with a slight limp. On a bad day, I walk with a cane; if I walk at all. I have spent various degrees of time over the past 8 years taking medicines which include; celebrex, nuerontin, robaxin, and hydrocodone; as well as having received a spinal epidural. Currently, I am taking ultram and exercising regularly. This has kept my mind clear, as well as has not encouraged respiratory problems such as hydrocodone did. Although this regiment helps more than any previous treatment, it does not always suffice to adequately reduce pain.

Recently, as I finished school; I was taking 100-150mg Ultram, 1800mg Ibuprofen, and exercising regularly. This kept me quite mobile and pain free. Upon graduation, crashed economy, not finding a job, etc – I have had to return, again, to manual labor. Again, my entire body aches/hurts constantly. Now, I exercise, take 2400 mg Ibuprofen, and up to; but no more than, 300 mg Ultram daily (still less than the FDA’s maximum daily dose of 400mg). I have had swings like this before; and am well aware that once I can return to less physical work I will be able to greatly reduce my intake.

My most recent MRI states:
…decreased signal intensity of the intervertebral discs at L4-5 and L5-S1, consistent with disk degeneration and decreased water content…. bulging of L4-S1 disc…. Area of altered signal involving disc – central and extends adjacent to the S1 nerve root. Most likely etiology is disc herniation with some adjacent granulation tissue or fibrosis.

However, I have yet to meet a doctor who would recommend surgery or anything invasive on an individual my age. I am essentially left in limbo to do nothing but hurt – while at the same time bombarded with individuals in and out of the medical field shouting the dangers of prescription medicine use. I have recently graduated school – and am ineligible to visit my prior doctor at the University Clinic, and am again without insurance. Therefore I am unable to refill my Ultram. So now I am faced with the blissful prospect of paying $150-300 (which I don’t have) simply to speak to YET another new doctor – explain my situation – and look like a junkie because I have no prior history with this new doctor; OR purchase this medicine online and avoid the whole aggravating mess.

I have put myself through college, twice, while on pain-killers. I have yet to miss a day of work or class, receive anything less than excellent grades, or damage any personal relationship due this prescription – my family is well aware of my prescription. Quite frankly in my experience with tramadol, I am unaware of any side-effect which would encourage abuse. So please do not:

1) Say; “go visit with your doctor”.
I have seen thousands of individuals on this site explain they have no insurance; only to be answered with; “Pills are bad – you should go speak to your doctor”. That is both a fruitless answer; as well as ill-contemplated. If they could easily afford to speak to a doctor – they would.

2) Narrate a story of your loved ones pill habit or how addicted you are/were.
I am an extremely productive member of society and it is only my distaste for excruciating pain that stands in the way of my immediate quitting. And regardless, in a week when my prescription does run out – I will be quitting; pain or no pain. At which point, I will become useless to all those around me again.

My Questions:
1) I am looking for any/all recommendations for this situation.
2) What daily mg quantities indicates addiction (Approximation obviously)?
3) What would you recommend in place of exercise and Ultram?
4) Is there new research (outside of what is obviously posted on the internet) on the application of Ultram on Depression.

Half the individuals on here claim it helps immensely, the other half say it only encourages their depression. All I am aware of is that since I have begun Ultram; my mood swings have diminished. Essentially every male in my family has been diagnosed with Bipolar I. Even my brother has recently been diagnosed with Cyclothymia. I appear (since 2007) to be the only male in my family who maintains a stable mood. I am not manic, sluggish, unreliable, bouncy, stoner-like, or any other adjective associated with opium use. I simply find this curious – and am enjoying my new lack of depressive lows and anxiety attacks.

A: Hi, I can’t really help just empathize.

I took it for a while for fibromyaglia, but it exacerbated my depression to the point of suicidal consideration. I am glad it seems to work for yours.

I know what it feels like to see new drs and look like a pill head. I get it too. I’m in the process of looking for new drug. The only thing that lets me be a productive part of society and relatively pain free is lortab 10’s. How do you ask for that without looking like a seeker? But it hard to get across from them, that youre not a seeker or an addict, you don’t get high from it, you just are able to function.

Good Luck

Q: Can any of these drugs be abused?
I’m sorry to ask this but I found these in my father’s medicine cabinet as well as a credit card statement for online pharmacies, which I cannot understand why he would use because he has a very good medical insurance policies, they are:
Caduet
Celebrex
something that says it was a generic of tagament
and I think it was albutrin (sp?)
I’m not sure because I’ve only gotten a look, and my dad is a recovering alcoholic and I understand my family is prone to addiction so can anyone tell me if I should be OVERLY concerned?

A: yes it is a cause for concern. why would he buy medicines online? the whole situation points towards something negative.

Q: Pamelor (anti-depressant) for fibromyalgia pain?
I just got diagnosed with fibromyalgia. When I first went to my doctor, he gave me a prescription for Pamelor and at the time I had no idea that it was an anti-depressants. I dont believe in anti-depressants…I used to be on them at one point and they actually made me more depressed and suicidal too..I’m really afraid to use them.

I called him to talk about my concern and then he told me that this is a really low does of pamelor given to control pain…i asked him about weight gain as a side effect and he said its really rare. I have my doubts though because when I look at reviews online, I see people have gained weight and have gotten severe dry mouth…that concerns me…

Has anyone taken this drug specifically for fibromyalgia? If I don’t take medicine and rely just on physical therapy and excercise and anti-inflammatories (celebrex 2/day 200mg), can I get better with just that?

This is all really hard to deal with. I’m only 23 and I was just told that I’m going to have pain for the rest of my life. That’s hard to deal with….Does fibromyalgia tends to get worse? Any help/advice/ personal experience would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance for your help.
My doctor doesn’t know about my past (6 years ago) reaction to anti-depressant. I don’t want to bring it up because I don’t want it to be in my records…

A: Hi Amy! I’m sorry you’re going through this!
First of all, Justmeinthisworld is right; many doctors give antidepressants for fibro because it changes the seratonin level in the brain. By doing this, it is supposed to help with some of the pain and possibly sleeping problems that we fibro patients have. I’ve had fibro for over 15 years, and I have taken some in the past without success. I’m sorry, I can’t say I have taken Pamelor though. If you have had problems with antidepressants in the past, you need to let your doctor know. Remember that your medical records are private. Your doctor should know everything concerning your medical history for your safety!
As for the anti-inflammatories, once again, they are given to decrease pain, but many fibro patients really don’t benefit from these. There are a few drugs out there right now that are being prescribed for fibro: Lyrica, Cymbalta, and Savella. I heard about too many problems with Lyrica, so I didn’t try it. Cymbalta did make me gain weight without any good results. I am now on Savella and doing pretty well without weight gain-yay! Remember, everyone responds differently to medications, so good effects and side effects will vary from person to person!
I have never had any pain “free” years, but I do have times that the pain is really not all that bad. Doing things to take care of yourself- eating well, resting as much as you can… will all help. Massage will make you feel so much better! You’re already working with a physical therapist, so I know you’re already learning how to stretch your muscles, so that is wonderful! There are also a few supplements out there that have been shown to help with fibro: Malic acid with magnesium, Omega 3’s, B12, Vitamin D. Many doctors will encourage you to take these. Always check with your doctor.
Don’t get discouraged; it’s not a death sentence! You can have a good life with fibro. Read all you can about it. Read from reputable companies- arthritis foundation, fibromyalgia network. Anytime a company wants your money for a ‘cure’, beware and turn away! There is more and more research going on concerning fibro, so more is being discovered about it.
Hang in there! Once your doctor finds the right medicine for your body, you’ll start to feel better and tolerate fibro much more. Take him a list of your concerns and questions, plus anything that your research has shown that might help. A good doctor will appreciate you taking an active role in your health.
There are also yahoo groups that will connect you with others. One is the Fibromyalgia_Support_Group. It’s full of wonderful people who understand all your concerns!
Sorry this is so long! Hope it helped some! Good luck!

Q: what would be the possible outcome of Torn ligaments/tendons in iraq?
Ok first I am going to give the medical history of my problem and try to educate whoever is reading this based off of what I know through research on the internet and previous doctors (Majors in the army). When i was in A.I.T. in 2007 I tore my Anteriro talofibular ligament while spraining my ankle. This is very common and with enough rest ice and physical therapy it will eventually heel. After 9 months and improper use of a profile and me being hard headed and listening to shitty NCO’s making me do shit i shouldnt have done physically, like PT and things my ankle was never normal. After about 8 months and complaining of pain, i had completed three sessions of physical therapy, they finally gave me an MRI. When i initially rolledmy ankle and it was swollen black n blue they just gave me tylenol and a profile and crutches, so this was the first MRI. 8 months later. This is when they found out i had the anterior talofibular ligament torn in my right ankle, i was put in a cast for a month, than the major said i might need surgery but its a big step cutting people open, so we decided it was never going ot be normal but it wasnt pain ful. I decided to resume with no profile. About a year later i deployed to iraq. I left in august and in early september in Kuwait, i rolled it running on rocks. At this time i had on n off pain everyday. I did not tell anyone. I started doing missions in iraq and clearing fields and what not as the pain got worse. In November i complained to the doctor and he literally said take tylenol for 11 months and than get surgery in the rear after the tour, because he needs me on the line(im a 35 m i do source ops and interrogations) I go out with the infantry but im not infantry and i wasnt in his company i was attached, so i told my nco. He than told our chain of command and they thought (OH HES INJURED LETS SWITCH HIM OUT) but didnt take my injury serious. So i went to our PA and he said ok listen lets do physical therapy and take naproxin, celebrex, tylenol, wear a brace. so i did this, come december i was going on leave and asked if i could get a second MRI(The first was in korea 8 months after initial injury nov 1 2007.) so i was authorized an mri in december, i got back late december and i have the mri cd and the typed report from a doctor at ucla. I now have three torn ligaments and a torn peroneal brevis tendon, with fluid in 2 different areas. after igot back they pushed back me seeing the PA because he moved fobs. So i did nothing, still in pain and fighting sleep and being comfortable everyday i kept my mouth shut and patiently asked every week “will i see a doctor soon to go over my MRI” so i finally get to go next week and see the doctor who is a major and his field is physical medicine. I researched this problem and my pain everyday and warmthness in my foot, instability is all coming from the torn ligaments and tendon. Everything i research online says the tendon tore because i have a pre existing injury which makes my ankle loose and unstable. the tendon frayed apart and unlike ligaments needs surgery to repair. The research says the pain will not go away and only get worse if i dont have the tendon surgically repaired. now to my questions

1. What will happened when i see thePA and go over MRI results? (will he make me do more physical therapy and tylenol? make me wear a cast?) even though everyone knows if u tear ur peroneal brevis tendon u can only heel it and make it better by surgery.

2. Do you get sent to the rear for surgery if it is needed?

3. If he tells me i wont have surgery and theyn wont send me home, and i have to finish 6 months of my tour in pain because its not serious, what should i do? is this malpractice?
thanks

A: listen man if you see a good doc they will tell you that surgery is normally the last resort but this surgery you will recover ok from. Yes you need to go back to the rear and get this fixed I personally feel you are stupid for not pushing this harder. I don’t know how new you are to the military but you are a replacable asset. from what I got above you have some garbage NCO’s and they are not doing there job by looking out for the Soldier. If your PA tells you tylenol and wait you need to go see another doc. if you can find an ER some where close go there you should be able to see a different doc.

Really you need to push this issue because you let them fuck you up and the Army will not have a problem kicking you out on a Medical board and you won’t get shit other than some compensation.

And no you can not claim Malpractice on the military sorry.
