Q: Withdrawal of Clopidogrel, when eluting stent is fitted, is it safe?
I had an Angioplasty, and eluting stent fitted 18 Months ago, the health trust says i no longer need clopidogrel. I am worried about late stent thrombosis, will I be at Risk?

A: Dude, only your cardiologist knows. Get more than one opinion.

Clopidogrel (the generic name of Plavix) is a blood thinner that has special properties. I’ve been on it for seven years (since my stents were fitted back in late ‘99) and I prefer to stay on it. I’m a mid-40s caucasian male who had a heart attack in my late 30s. My cardiologist says that he prefers me to be on the drug, and I live a pretty normal life (well, I gave up eggs and roller coasters). Besides, Clopidogrel is a generic… can’t cost that much. With my insurance I pay ten bucks a month instead of thirty.

Q: Questions about Plavix (Clopidogrel) and drugs in the same class?
I’m trying to compare Clopidogrel to other drugs in the same class. Have I missed any of these drugs? Not certain…let me know if you have any information. What other drugs are in the same class as Plavix?

A: there is not drug to compare with plavix, there are similar drugs not the same though, there is persantine, aggrenox those are about the closest. why are you on plavix? if its for a new stent plavix is the only medication to use. if it is for cva or something along those lines it can be sub-ed with something else.

Q: Are there any differences between statins when added to clopidogrel?

A: It is my understanding @ this point in time that Potenial Statin-clopidogrel requires more Randomise Prospective Study. I don’t think at this point I personally would not be able to answer your question…due to the fact that more studies are being made. In the future I might be able to answer it for you. Best of luck.

Q: is any one on lansoprazole and clopidogrel, if so do the two together cause any interactions?
I have read so many problems with the two makes me wonder if its worth it all.
Thank you.

A: Hi, there is no drug interaction between lansoprazole and Clopidogrel. All medication has side effects, most of the time people don’t experience major side effects.

If you are experiencing side effects that are impeding on your life, then have a chat with your Dr- there other medications. There is never a ‘one pill suits all’. With all drugs, there is a risk benefit ratio and this should always be taken into consideration.

It’s very important that you take Clopidogrel if you have been prescribed it, don’t stop taking your medication without speaking with your Dr first.

currently 21 wks pregnant and on clopidogrel medication following two mini strokes in august last year

A: No medication should be used in pregnancy unless it is considered essential. With your history, it is obviously the case that something is needed. Clopidogrel has not been shown to have any particular problems in pregnancy in animal studies.
