Q: Breast cancer – Arimidex VS. Generic -OR- Brand Name VS. Generic?
Hey all! A little over a year ago my mom went in for a mammogram and the doctors discovered a small breast cancer lump. She underwent surgery to remove it and then also had some radiation therapy. Now the doctor has her on the “Arimidex” pill, which she has been directed to take daily over the course of 5 years. Up until a few months ago, Arimidex was the only brand available. Now, however, there is a generic brand that is much cheaper. My question is for people who have ever taken a generic prescription pill…are they the same as brand name? Is there any difference, and is it totally safe to make the switch? I ask because my mom is a little nervous about changing it, although she would be pretty happy to considering the price difference.

Thanks so much!! :)

A: a PROPERLY FDA-APPROCED generic is usually as good as the brand name equivalent, but you MUST be careful! While the MEDICATION is the same, there are “fillers” in the tablets, and each different generic may use a different filler. THE FILLER in a particule branad may cause problems with your mother.

because of these changes, you should NEVER change to a generic without your doctor’s authorization. Many pharmacies won’t fill a prescription with a generic unless the doctor pre-authorizes it on the prescription.

NEVER BUY MAIL-ORDER MEDICATION FROM A NON-APPROVED PHARMACY. Always purcahse from “Brand NAmes” like Walgreens, CVS, Rite-Aid, or the equivalent! This to bo be SURE that your order is fileld with properly FDA-Approved medications, and not “generic rip-offs” from outside the country. An UNAUTHORIZED pharamacy may be shipping you anything from reduced dosages, to no dosages, to poisons.

The United States Custom Services are alwasy catching illegal shipments of medications. Of those shipments stopped, 75% were found to be contaminated with anything from sand to metal filings to rat poison! 55% were found to contain the wrong dosages of the medication (usually less than stated), with a significant number contained NO medication — just fillers like powdered clay and talcum powder. 15% were found to contain the WRONG medication. [One example was a shipment of a common blood pressure medication with actually contained the drug Tadalafil -- for Erectile Dysfunction!]

Before usinag a generic, GET YOUR DOCTOR’S AUZTHORIZATION! And when you buy, purchase ONLY from a brand name pharmacy in the United States.

f you follow these two rules, generics are compeltely safe and effective — AND low cost!
